Sculpture Design Updates

Since the selection of his concept design as the one to take forward for the Shelley Memorial, sculptor Vincent Gray has been reviewing the feed back from the public consultation  and other stakeholders and given some thought to the journey from concept  to the final realisation of the design, in line with the suggestions made.

We thought we would share some of his initial ideas.

This design includes Shelley’s key themes spilling from his writings in the form of an open book and quill and composed as relief collage. Within the relief collage themes emerge including Rameses, broken chains, skylark and flowers. The overall composition suggests the Romantic while the plinth reflects authority; the sculptural element represents the mind. The stone plinth continues to carry selected words and poems by Shelley. One step has been removed to allow easy wheelchair access.

In this design books replace the hand. Cascading from the books are autumn leaves which soften the plinth as they fall and gather at the base. Book spines will carry key themes. The stone plinth continues to carry selected words and poems by Shelley. As above, one step has been removed to allow easy wheelchair access.

Look out for further design updates as we progress from concept to realisation. In the mean time we are working hard on  the fundraising campaign that  will help us deliver a  wonderful commemorative artwork.  If you would like to support our fundraising get in touch via email: shelleymemorialproject@btinternet.com, or donate here.
